Campaña por la lana España 2012

I am going to break the Trashumancia posts and put up this post, due to the fact that if you live in Madrid, and do not know about the campaign for wool events going on this week, you will still have a chance to go and see some events and the art after you have read this post. 

Voy a interrumpir los posts sobre la Trashumancia para poner este post, debido al hecho de que si vivís en Madrid, y no sabéis acerca de los eventos de la Campaña por la Lana que están ocurriendo esta semana, tendréis la oportunidad de ir a ver algún evento y el arte después de haber leído este post.

Why the campaign for wool on a Spanish historical spinning blog? To me wool is the basis for spinning, and the Campaign for Wool is history in the making. From the Campaigns website:

¿Por qué la campaña para la lana en un blog sobre la historia del hilado en España? Para mí, la lana es la base para el hilado, y la Campaña por la lana es historia en movimiento. Del sitio web Campañas:

La Campaña por la Lana es una iniciativa llevada a cabo por Su Alteza Real el Príncipe de Gales, quien ha observado que la industria lanera se enfrenta con retos enormes y sin precedentes. La Campaña por la Lana es multinacional, multisectorial, integradora y procura abarcar todos los profesionales de la lana, desde las grandes empresas hasta los artesanos.

The campaign is lead by the Prince of Wales and is an effort to bring awareness of the properties of wool and the decline of the use of wool in textiles. It is common in Spain, as well as UK, that farmers will bury or burn the wool, as it is an annoying extra product off the sheep that they want to use for meat or milk. I have heard the amount of money that they get from selling the wool is less then they have to pay the shearer to shear the sheep in the first place. All non primitive breeds have to be shorn every year or the fleece can get too heavy and cause the sheep health problems. What that means for us spinners is that the sheep are not valued for their wool and therefore they are not being breed for it, the quality goes down, and there is even the potential for the breeds that do not give good milk or meat to die out.

La campaña está dirigida por el Príncipe de Gales y es un esfuerzo para crear conciencia de las propiedades de la lana y la disminución del uso de la lana en el sector textil. Es común en España, al igual que en el Reino Unido, que los ganaderos entierren o quemen la lana, ya que es un molesto producto adicional de las ovejas que se desean utilizar para carne o leche. He oído que la cantidad de dinero que obtienen por la venta de la lana es menos que lo que tienen que pagar al esquilador para esquilar las ovejas. Todas las razas no primitivas necesitan ser esquiladas cada año o la lana puede ser demasiado pesada y causar problemas de salud a las ovejas. Lo que esto significa para nosotros los hilanderos es que las ovejas no son apreciadas por su lana y por lo tanto no están siendo criadas para ello, la calidad disminuye, e incluso existe la posibilidad de que las razas que no dan buena leche o carne desaparezcan.

To me this campaign is frightfully important to bring awareness to the consumer, spinner or not. The campaign makes an effort to link wool to the fashion world by having models pose with the sheep and encouraging stores to join the campaign and highlight their wool products. If the fashion world makes a greater demand for better wool, spinners will benefit. The fashion world has the main control of  the wool market, whereas us spinners are just a drop in the bucket. This campaign is going strong in at least 8 countries and counting and I hope that it continues to thrive.

Para mí esta campaña es terriblemente importante para hacer tomar conciencia a los consumidores, hilanderos o no. La campaña hace un esfuerzo por vincular la lana con el mundo de la moda al hacer posar a modelos con las ovejas y alentar a las tiendas para unirse a la campaña y destacar sus productos de lana. Si el mundo de la moda hace que haya una mayor demanda de mejor lana, los hilanderos se beneficiarán. El mundo de la moda tiene el control principal del mercado de la lana, nosotros los hilandores somos sólo un pequeño porciento. Esta campaña va fuerte en al menos 8 países por ahora y espero que siga prosperando.

The theme for this year was the four seasons and they have done it well with two knitted or crocheted scenes from every season and themed knitted bunting running up and away from each season. I loved winter the best, but all of it was breath taking. A lot of work went into these and I am proud of the representation of my craft. As always click to enlarge. El tema para este año fueron las cuatro estaciones del año y lo han hecho bien con dos escenas de punto o ganchillo por cada temporada, y ristras temáticas de punto conectando cada temporada. Me encantó el invierno sobre todo, pero todo fue impresionante. On Serrano across from the Jardines del Descubrimiento were some educational stations about wool. Including un-processed and processed wool, a weaving demonstration, of course a spinning demonstration, and, naturally, sheep! There were at least four different breeds that I made out, and they certainly were attracting attention.

En Serrano frente a los Jardines del Descubrimiento había algunas estaciones educativas sobre la lana, incluyendo una sobre lana sin procesar y procesada, una demostración de tejido, por supuesto una demostración de hilado, y, naturalmente, las ovejas! Habían por lo menos cuatro razas diferentes por lo que yo sé, y ciertamente llamaban la atención de la gente.

Hello everyone sorry it has been so long between posts but I moved and had to get my internet reinstalled. I have some exciting posts that I am currently working on for the Fiesta de Trashumancia that happened at the end of October, usually the last Sunday, here in Madrid. I also have two more posts about what I found in the Segovia Folk museum, Casa del Sol, and coming up this week is the Campaign for wool here in Spain.

Hola a todos, lamento que haya pasado tanto tiempo entre posts, pero me mudé y me llevó un tiempo conseguir mi internet de nuevo. Tengo algunos posts interesantes en los que estoy trabajando en la actualidad para la Fiesta de la trashumancia que ocurrieron a finales de octubre, por lo general el último domingo, aquí en Madrid. También tengo dos posts más acerca de lo que encontré en el museo Folk de Segovia, Casa del Sol, y lo que viene esta semana es la Campaña por la lana en España.

But while I get those posts organized I did not want to leave the blog empty. So here is the video footage that I took during the Fiesta de Trashumancia:

The video and the parade starts with the horns the shepherds use and the sheep dogs. Then you will see various regional dresses, music and dances as people from different regions are represented in the parade. Of course the meaning of Trashumancia is to move livestock from one pasture to another, so sheep are not the only represented animal. There are plenty of cattle, and of course the horses and dogs used to help the shepherds move their stock.

El vídeo y el desfile comienza con los cuernos de los pastores y con los perros que utilizan para las ovejas. A continuación podréis ver varios vestidos regionales, y cómo música y bailes de la gente de diferentes regiones están representadas en el desfile. Por supuesto, el significado de la Trashumancia es mover el ganado de un campo a otro, por lo que las ovejas no son el único animal representado. Hay un montón de bueyes, y, por supuesto, los caballos y los perros utilizados para ayudar a los pastores a mover sus ganados.

If you look carefully in the video you can see that a lot of wool garments are worn. Also the saddle blankets of the horses are woven of wool in the natural colors of brown and white. The exact colors of the merinos that passed. You will also notice the wooden shoes some of the shepherds are wearing, an ancient shoe design made to help walk on mud.


Si os fijáis bien en el video se puede ver que una gran cantidad de gente lleva prendas de lana. También las mantas de los caballos de silla son tejidos de lana en los colores naturales de marrón y blanco. Los colores exactos de los merinos que véis pasar. También os daréis cuenta de los zapatos de madera algunos de los pastores llevan puestos, un antiguo diseño de calzado hecho para ayudar a caminar por el barro.

Glosario / Glossary

I have put together a glossary for my own use of spinning terms in both Spanish and English. I am sure that this list is by no means complete. I have also noticed that some equipment in Spain today carry the "Spanish-ized" version of the English word for example: "pickar" to pick (to open up the fibers before carding). So far I have left those off the list. I think that with more research I will find the Spanish words for all of those parts / tools. If I have seen the word used only once and I do not have another citation I have put a "?" in the same line. I am 100% sure of the English words, it is the Spanish terms that I am unsure of. If you know of any others, or if you have corrections or questions please feel free to tell me.

He creado un glosario para mi propio uso de términos relacionados con el hilado en español y en inglés. Estoy segura de que esta lista no es de ninguna manera completa. También he notado que algunos términos en español en la actualidad son versiones españolizadas de la versión inglesa (por ejemplo: "Pickar" como traducción de "pick", es decir, abrir la fibras antes del cardado). Por el momento, tales palabras no figuran en mi lista. Creo que con más investigación encontraré las palabras en español para todos esas partes / herramientas. Si he visto el uso de una palabra una sóla vez he puesto un "?" en la misma línea. Estoy 100% segura de las palabras en inglés, son los términos en español de los que no estoy segura. Si sabéis de otras palabras, o si tenéis preguntas o correcciones, por favor no dudéis en decírmelo.

Museo de Segovia / Museum of Segovia

For my first series of historical posts I would like to talk about the folk museum in Segovia. Also known as Casa Del Sol.

Para mi primera serie de la historia me gustaría hablar sobre el museo etnológico en Segovia. También conocido como "Casa Del Sol"

I got the suggestion to go there from the "Spindle Lore" group on Ravelry. Where if you go to this thread you will see pictures and videos abut the spindles of the Iberian Peninsula. The conversation in the thread is in English, and the videos are in multiple languages: Catalan, Spanish, Galician, and Portuguese. The videos are worth the visit though, because it does not matter what language you speak, it is the language of spinning.

Recibí la sugerencia del grupo "Spindle Lore" en Ravelry. En este hilo puedes ver fotos y vídeos sobre los husos de la península Ibérica. La conversación en Spindle Lore es totalmente en inglés, y los vídeos están en varios idiomas: catalán, español, gallego y portugués. Sin embargo, los vídeos valen la visita, porque no importa que idioma habléis, es el lenguaje del hilado.

This is a good museum to start out in, because of the significance and history of the wool trade in Segovia. When you go to Segovia today, you will not find much that is wool or spinning related outside the museum, but we will talk about that in future posts.

Este es un buen museo para empezar por el significado y la historia del comercio de la lana en Segovia. En Segovia hoy no encontraréis mucho relacionado con la lana o el hilado afuera del museo, pero hablaremos de eso en posts futuros.

The Spanish term for the guided sheep migration from pasture to pasture is "trashumancia", and in Spain the sheep are still herded yearly from the North to the South of the country. This trashumancia started before the Roman invasion and despite its ups and downs is still very much a tradition today. In fact, on October 28th 2012 here in Madrid there is going to be the XIX Fiesta de Trashumancia. 

En España todavía hay una Trashumancia entre el Norte y Sur del país. Ese trashumancia empezó antes de la invasión de los romanos y a pesar de sus altibajos es todavía una tradición vigente. De hecho, el 28 de Octubre 2012, aquí en Madrid tendrá lugar la XIX Fiesta de Trashumancia.

The Fiesta de Trashumancia started out as an annual protest on the last Sunday of October. The Shepherds were protesting the expansion of Madrid onto their herding paths. Now this event is more of a celebration than an official protest. Sheep are herded through the very center of Madrid along with horses, cows, and people dressed in regional costumes from throughout Spain. I have included a link to this years time schedule. I attended last years festivities and you can see photos, a video and read about it here. I plan on going to this year fiesta too, and you can expect another blog post about it here.

La Fiesta de Trashumancia comenzó como una protesta anual en el último domingo de Octubre. Los pastores protestaban la expansión de Madrid en sus rutas de pastoreo. Ahora este evento es más una fiesta que una protesta oficial. Las ovejas son conducidas por el centro de Madrid, junto con los caballos, vacas y gente vestida con trajes regionales de varias partes de España. He incluído un enlace con información sobre el evento de este año. Yo asistí a la fiesta del último año y podéis ver las fotos, un video y leer sobre ello aquí (lo siento pero sólo está en inglés). Estoy planeando ir a la fiesta de este año también, y podéis esperar otra entrada del blog al respecto.

One of the trashumancia routes went through the city of Segovia during the time of the year that the sheep needed to be sheared. The sheep were sheared, and the wool was cleaned in Segovia. Hence the wool trade was once the main source of income in Segovia. Segovia and the rural area surrounding it was one of the most important in the Castille merino trade. If you know about your sheep breeds the Merino sheep is of Spanish origin and was the softest wool available in Europe.

Una de las rutas de trashumancia pasaba por la ciudad de Segovia durante la época del año en que las ovejas necesitaban ser esquiladas. Las ovejas eran esquiladas, y se limpiaba su lana en Segovia. Por lo tanto el comercio de la lana fue la principal fuente de ingresos en Segovia. Segovia y el área rural circundante fue uno de los más importantes en el comercio de merino en Castilla. Si sabéis sobre distintas razas de ovejas, la oveja Merino es de origen español y era la que proporcionaba la lana más suave en Europa.

In the 13th century already the economic importance of moving the sheep from North to South was enormous. A document dated with the year 1273 is the oldest document known detailing the rights controlling the movements of the sheep granted by Alfonso X "the knowledgable" to the association of farmers in Castilla known as "La Mesta".

En el siglo XIII la importancia económica de mover a las ovejas de Norte a Sur era ya enorme. Un documento fechado en el año 1273 es el documento más antiguo conocido que detalla los derechos de control de los movimientos de las ovejas otorgados por Alfonso X "el Sabio" a la asociación de los ganaderos en Castilla conocida como "La Mesta".

The industry was so important that the king had guards guarding and mediating conflicts on the sheep paths. The trade was favored by the monarchy because of the tax revenue it created. Monasteries and the high nobles were also involved in this lucrative business. La Mesta was abolished in 1836 by a liberal movement, but there are still many remaining paths. Today there are new Arrangements signed into effect by Spain's current King Carlos, thanks in part to the first trashumancia protests.

 La industria era tan importante que el rey tenía guardias de vigilancia y mediadores de conflictos en los caminos de ovejas. El comercio se vio favorecido por la monarquía, debido a los impuestos que recibían. Los monasterios y los nobles también participaron en este lucrativo negocio. La Mesta fue abolida en 1836 por un movimiento liberal, pero todavía persisten muchas cañadas. Hoy en día hay nuevos convenios firmados por el Rey Juan Carlos, gracias en parte a las primeras protestas de Trashumancia.

Hello everyone, I am from the US and I moved to Madrid about a year and a half ago. I brought my interest in spinning with me.

Hola a todos, soy de los Estados Unidos y vine a Madrid hace un año y medio. Me traje mi interés en hilar conmigo.

For me a fascinating part of the history of Spain, was its role in the wool trade. This blog will be the way that I can document and share my findings. I will also share different tips and techniques or vendors I find on my way. 

Para mí una parte fascinante de la historia de España fue el papel del comercio de la lana. Este blog será una manera en la que puedo documentar y compartir mis resultados. Tambien voy a compatir consejos y técnicas diferentes o vendedores que me encuentro en mi camino.

One of the first things that I noticed about Spain was that spinning was not as popular, nor the tools as easy to get as in the US. When I started researching the history of spinning in Spain online I found that the information is scattered and difficult to find. I hope that this blog will be a place to collect and store this information, and that I can make the information available in English and Spanish online.

Una de las primeras cosas que noté en España es que el hilado no es muy popular, ni las herramientas tan faciles de conseguir como en los E.E.U.U. Cuando empecé a investigar la historia del hilado en la red encontré que la información es dispersa y difícil de encontrar. Espero que este blog será un lugar para coleccionar y almacenar esta información, y que pueda hacer que la información esté disponible en la red en inglés y español.
